The commencement of this document came from the persistent questioning from my 8 year old daughter about two questions.
Two questions I dearly wish to answer for her.
This is an answer to her second but least important question on what is wrong with doing yoga.
An answer that continued to expand like an unfolding DNA sequence or a compressed file decompressing. The scope, duration and intensity continued to increase.
With uttermost certainty I have not fully fleshed out the whole subject matter on this. You could go into greater and greater depth by picking just one word, quote, subject, technique, individual and on and on.
I hope to at least have covered what is necessary as Christians to comprehend this matter and to be cautious in knowing the “deep things of Satan” whilst still being fully appraised of his devices.
The other question of my daughter, of course more pertinent being “How do I know Jesus is real?”
One that has factual answers but equally requires a revelation from God Himself to have spiritual eyes and ears opened.
I can address the first with teaching and instruction but the second requires prayer and a diligent searching on her part of which I can only encourage, and in the end depends upon the calling of God Himself.
So may this take you places that you have not understood before. May it expose how the culture is indoctrinating us and our children into gradually accepting the “new religion” which is really the oldest religion of rebellious mankind.
Indoctrinating us through our eyes, through our ears, in our daily thoughts through our language, the words we now use, the meanings we attribute to them, and I’m speaking about the pulpits let alone the media, the thought police has become ourselves.
This is frightfully in line with what was written in 1956 by Edward Hunter in his book “Brainwashing: The Story of the men who defied it”.
This book delved into the Strategies used in Soviet brainwashing and the experiences of prisoners in Communist Countries in how to survive these Strategies.
“Even when he stands by himself, the truly indoctrinated communist must be part of the collective. He must be incapable of hearing opposing ideas and facts, no matter how convincing or how forcibly they bombard his senses. A trustworthy communist must react in an automatic manner without any force being applied.” Edward Hunter, Brainwashing: The story of the men who defied it (Pyramid Books, 1956), 201.
If you find yourself defensive about this topic and find your mind shutting down to retain your pet ideas and beliefs remember the above quote, and remember
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8:36
The word for free means you are not a slave. Do not be a slave also then in your mind.
The word for indeed means of a truth.
You are not a slave any longer to believe a lie. Come to the apprehension and the liberty found in Christ know the truth and the truth will make you free.
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32
May the Lord Bless you and shine His face upon you.
The Introduction of Yoga into the West
Much of the introduction of Yoga into the West has been quite ironically based upon the actual initial inverse of this now current trend. That is the introduction of Western Ideas and Christianity into the East.
It is hard to tell the outcome if India had been left untouched, but speculation aside, when the Christian Missionaries entered India en masse they introduced ideas and ways of thinking which indelibly altered the religious and national direction.
What was completely a religion that was indifferent to assisting the destitute, the weak, the hungry, the sick, poor and naked, (based upon the belief that to intervene in the outworking of the persons karma would only be a postponement till the next life at best and prevent the evolution of the soul at worst), began (though in a limited manner) to adopt the missionary ideals of caring for the sick, hungry, brought in by the Christian Missionaries, both Catholic and Protestant.
The same applied in the matter of evangelism. Something that Hinduism originally did not participate in any great or grand manner.
It was the introduction of the idea of evangelizing, proselyting, that religious thinkers in the East began to adopt the same manners and customs.
One of the great tools of evangelisation being Yoga.
(This also does not bring into focus the upheaval and changes brought about by the violent conquest of Islam and prior to that, Alexander the Great’s incursions into and influence upon India.)
Hindu Indian Monk, Swami Vivekanda who attended the first Parliament of world religions in 1893 was spokesman for Vedanta and founded the Vedanta Society of America in 1894.
“The time has come for the Hinduism of the Rishis to become dynamic. Shall we stand by whilst alien hands attempt to destroy the fortress of the Ancient Faith?…shall we remain passive or shall we become aggressive, as in the days of old, preaching unto the nations the glory of the Dharma?…In order to rise again, India must be strong and united, and must focus all its living forces. To bring this about is the meaning of my sannyasa!” Hinduism invades America by Wendell Thomas pg 62-74
“… one of the pioneer swamis sent to America by the direct disciples of Ramakrishna to build on the work started by Swami Vivekananda at the turn of the century.” http://vedanta.org/about-the-vedanta-society/swami-prabhavananda/
Another Guru, B.K.S Iyengar (also known as Guruji) redeveloped Hatha yoga into a usable and more friendly yoga for the West in the late 1960’s and 70’s. Popularising it for all walks of life, aged, injured, inexperienced, and experienced by introduction of props to assist in maintaining and achieving correct posture and avoiding injury.
The clear fact that injuries caused by yoga are rarely, if ever, discussed but rather swept under the carpet by vested interests, these will be discussed later on. Such revelations though at least have come from Yoga practitioners themselves.
Iyengar published 14 books. “Light on Yoga” being the first in 1966 now in 18 languages. He also taught Aldous Huxley and numerous individuals.
His official website claims
“He gets students to perform and break barriers. He brings about an automatic transformation in the mind and habits of people. He is the only person to teach the highest aspects of yoga – Atma Darshan through asanas.” http://www.bksiyengar.com/modules/Guruji/guru.htm
I thought it was only physical exercise? “… an automatic transformation in the mind and habits” is more than just physical exercise.
For those who wish to argue against this line of thinking keep reading this document as it will clear up any misconceptions that you can separate the physical benefits from the spiritual effects.
Others have come of which one of the most successful has been Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1960’s.
His influence over the last 50 years has been considerable to say the least.
“In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Maharishi achieved fame as the guru to The Beatles and other celebrities. He started the TM-Sidhi programme, in the late 1970s that claimed to offer practitioners the ability to levitate and to create world peace.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maharishi_Mahesh_Yogi
The following statistics give us an idea what just this one man achieved.
- 40,000 TM teachers trained
- 5,000,000 taught TM
- 1000’s of teaching centres
- 100’s collages and universities in countries like India, Canada, US, UK, Switzerland.
- For profit businesses in health and nutrition and organic farms.
- Worth billions

In a message titled “The dangers of Yoga” Dr Ron Carlson states that in his study of Transcendental Meditation, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was commissioned by his Master Swami Brahmananda Saraswati (Guru Dev – meaning personified deity or divine teacher) to make a simple form of Yoga and Hinduism and take it to the world.
Another words Hindu evangelism.
Most importantly through Madam Blavatsky, in the late 1800’s, who travelled India to learn of the knowledge of the East and created the Theosophical Society.
One little known influence was upon Mahatma Gandhi is seen in his diary entry for January 30 1928
“I have come to the conclusion that Theosophy is Hinduism in theory, and that Hinduism is Theosophy in practice.” Harijan Journal of Mahatma Gandhi
Gandhi himself was a member of the Theosophical lodge in London.
Ira Craddock founder of the Church of Yoga in Chicago 1899, committed suicide in 1902 after receiving instruction from her spirit guide as an answer to her 9 year court case over censorship of her writings. She claims in her book Heavenly Bridegrooms that she was married to this spirit / angel.
She said an outside intelligence was telling her what to write.
It’s name was called Soph. Incredibly significant if you compare that with the modern Emergent Church Movement of the 21st Century.
Ira boasted that Genesis 6 was a good thing, and that was what was happening to her which states
“And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
(I am not going to enter the debate as to whether or not that passage actually means that.)
Aleister Crowley (whom we will speak of shortly) spoke well of Ira Craddock and her works stating in his publication “The Equinox”, the official organ of the OTO Ordo Templi Orientis that Heavenly Bridegrooms was
“… one of the most remarkable human documents ever produced, and it should certainly find a regular publisher in book form. The authoress of the MS. claims that she was the wife of an angel. She expounds at the greatest length the philosophy connected with this thesis. Her learning is enormous….This book is of incalculable value to every student of occult matters. No Magick library is complete without it.” The Equinox Vol. V No. 4 Sex and Religion
This is not the first Yoga practitioner who has contacted spirits and committed suicide as we will see later.
Aldous Huxley, another influential Westerner, from 1939 till his death in 1963, was heavily involved with the Vedanta Society of Southern California, lectured at the temple, wrote the introduction to the “Bhagavad Gita: The Song of God” translated by Swami Pradhavanada and contributed 48 articles to the magazine “Vedanta and the West.”, and was on the editorial board for the magazine between 1951 – 1962. Source:http://www.gurusfeet.com/guru/aldous-huxley
Above: Swami Prabhavananda, Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood
Aldous Huxley worked with Timothy Leary in experimenting with hallucinogens and worked to break down the social taboos which assisted in the outbreak of the beginning of free love and the drug abuse of the 1960’s.
Timothy Leary himself sought to bring about the vision of the following man who was greatly influential in introducing teachings of the East which manifested as Western Occultism.
Timothy Leary himself stated in an interview on PBS
“I’ve been an admirer of Aleister Crowley and I’m carrying on much of the work that he started over 100 years ago.”
The “the wickedest man in the world” (according to his mother), Aleister Crowley founder of the OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis) one wicked organisation of which many well known personalities are a part, eg: Paris Geldoff, Kayne West, Beyonce and Jay Z, and founder of the Gay Movement in the 1960’s, Harry Hay just to name a few.
He writes in the OTO’s official organ
“The letters OTO mean Ordo Templi Orientis but they also have secret meaning for initiates.
The aims of the OTO can only be understood fully by it’s highest initiates; but it may be said openly that it teaches Hermetic Science or Occult Knowledge, the Pure and Holy Magick of Light, the Secrets of Mystic attainment, Yoga of all forms, Gnana Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakta Yoga, and Hatha Yoga and all other branches of the secret Wisdom of the Ancients.
In its bosom repose the Great Mysteries. Its brain has resolved all the problems of philosophy and life. It possesses the secret of the Stone of the Wise, of the Elixir of Immortality, and of the Universal Medicine. Moreover it possesses a Secret capable of realising the world-old-dream, of the Brotherhood of Man.”
This was written when it was completely unacceptable in society. We can see though that this has come to be mainstream via clever social manipulation and indoctrination, via the media, music, movies and TV, and education, especially the “brotherhood of man” in
- the push to unite all things including religions into Oneness.
- The current movement of the brotherhood in the Middle East and the associations of the term with Freemasonry.
- The Motto of the French Revolution :Liberty, Egalite, Fraternity / Brotherhood. The implications of which cannot be fully fleshed out here in relation to Prophecy.1
It is clear from “The Equinox” that Yoga is Occult Knowledge and or Hermetic Science, which is
“… science falsely so called”. 1 Timothy 6:20. aka gnw/sij gnosis knowledge or science, yeudw, numoj psudeonumos, falsely named. Note “The Equinox” stated
“… Yoga of all forms…”.
Hermetic Science derives from Hermes Trismegistus (meaning thrice blessed) who wrote a number of books and or preserved a number of works which were lost in the great fire in the Alexandrian Library.
Hermes is depicted as holding an emerald upon which all Egyptian philosophy is written.
For example two works in the Hermetica are “The Emerald Tablets” and “The Book of Thoth”. (For those who have not read my blog on Avicci feel free to examine that as it mentions this this.)
Quoting well known 33 degree Freemason and American Civil War General Albert Pike
“The Hermetic Art is therefore, at the same time a religion, a philosophy, and a natural science. As a religion, it is that of the Ancient Magi and the Initiates of all ages; as a philosophy, we may find its principles in the school of Alexandria and the theories of Pythagoras; as a science, we must inquire for its processes of Paracelsus, Nicholas Flamel, 2 and Raymond Lulle.” Morals and Dogma.
Simply then, do you think Christian’s should be participating in Hermetic Arts, or Sciences?
I think the answer to that is a resounding no!
We have been led to believe Hinduism is disjointed and chaotic but in 1966 at the First World Hindu Conference, a stratagem was drawn up by top Hindu leaders up to convert the world. This does not discount the efforts that had been made by others in the past but this commenced a more determined and increased effort in evangelisation in the west.
It was clear from Mahatma Gandhi in his Diary entries that he was not satisfied with the direction the Theosophical society was taking at the time stating
“There are many admirable works in Theosophical literature, which one may read with the greatest profit; but it appears to me that too much stress has been laid upon mental and intellectual studies: upon argument, upon the development of occult powers, and that the central idea of theosophy, the brotherhood of mankind and the moral growth of man has been lost sight of in these.” Harijan Journal of Mahatma Gandhi
Gandhi has the same ambition as “the wickedest man in the world”.
It certainly appears Hinduism has taken upon itself the need to evangelise the West itself and not leave it to Western Occultism itself. I quote from the the Vishva Hindu Parishad who launched a Missionary initiative at Allahabad India to show they are in fact organized.
In 1979 at the second world congress of Hinduism attended by 60000 delegates from around the world it was announced
“Our mission in the West has been crowned with fantastic success. Hinduism is becoming the dominant world religion, and the end of Christianity has come near.”
Also in 1981 at a Transcendental Meditation Conference in India a TM spokesman stated
“The entire mission of TM is to counter the ever spreading demon of Christianity.”
This of course wouldn’t be apostate Christianity.
If we go back to the late 19th Century and look again at Swami Vivekananda who we have already met at the Parliament of World Religion, he stated the objective was to re-catalyse
“… society compounded of Western Science, Socialism and Indian Spirituality”.
This all reveals that a concerted effort in evangelism of the west has taken place not just to find new converts, but is especially antagonistic toward Christianity and in particular the exclusivity of Jesus Christ. If you have read my blog on The Generation Gap, you will see symmetry in the efforts of seemingly disparate groups to establish the same thing.
It is then worth while asking yourself how you can practise Yoga as a Christian, have you just been duped by a slick evangelistic tool? Keep reading to find out.
What is deeply concerning is that over time we have now the rapid rise of the same attitude towards “Christianity” coming from supposed “Christians” promoting similar avenues to spiritual enlightenment and have stated the very same anti Christian sentiments.
For example, we hear this from Erwin McManus author of the “Christian” book “The Barbarian Way” stating in an interview
“My goal is to destroy Christianity as a world religion and be a re-catalyst for the movement of Jesus Christ… Some people are upset with me because it sounds like I’m anti-Christian. I think they might be right.” http://www.christianexaminer.com/Articles/Articles%20Mar05/Art_Mar05_09.html
His book is endorsed by Rick Warren.
It is wise then to see these “Christian” leaders in this light as possible evangelists for another Jesus and another Gospel, working hand in hand with other religions to overthrow the Kingdom of God and to establish a centralised global united religious kingdom founded upon common spiritual denominators be it intentionally or not.
I can personally understand where McManus is coming from in that when I left a church many years ago, I was deeply affected by the experience and found myself questioning everything including my faith and whether I even had any left. Unlike McManus though, I was not satisfied until I found my faith established on the Word of God and facts not feelings and opinions.
To say you wish to destroy Christianity is the talking of a fool who does not know the difference between feelings and reality. His anger and Ephesians 4:26-27
“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil. “
He has truly given place to the devil. A door I literally came to in my mind, opened, and perceiving what lay beyond refused to enter further.
Some say “Christian” means little Christ. I should be far from that honour I think.
But believers in Christ were first called Christians in the book of Acts at Antioch (Acts 11:26) as an insult, and in the tradition of the Hebrew people down through the ages, is an example of embracing what was meant as an insult or joke and turning it round to mean something completely different.
As scripture states Jesus despised the shame of the cross. He looked down on it, he did not esteem it, it was meaningless to the greater good it would achieve.
I for a time also developed ideas that could maintain my faith in Christ and express my dissatisfaction with Church and Christians. I created a personal term “Christianarchy” back in early 1990 to mean the individual believers in Christ as the invisible church operating under the direction of the Holy Spirit, appearing as elements operating chaotically to outward observers but all working towards a common goal in Christ (spiritual unity though unified action) which would come together at the end but without scheming and planning.
This was in hindsight a support mechanism and defence to retain my faith and distance myself from the hypocrisy and wickedness I could see in the Church till my strength grew to resist lies and falsehood from the church, and be set straight myself and from my own hypocrisy.
Equally the word “Church” is artificial but many use it who do understand this fact because many more do not understand it’s false use and background of the word. So the term is used to avoid confusion.
Proto-Reformer and Bible Translator John Wycliff understood Church meaning “circle” (being contrary to ecclesia aka congregation) invoking pagan tradition and not Biblical authority, and endemic down through the centuries in the Christian Believers who “trust in princes” (Psalm 118:9) linking church with the secular authority. The Reformers made this fatal mistake and now we see how both the original “falling away” of the early church into Roman Catholicism is happening again on a global scale, where the adoption of alternative religious practices like yoga is a symptom.
Oxen Yoked together with a Yoke.
Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning to yoke as in to yoke or unite with god/God.
I obtained a definition from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/yoga
1. also Yoga A Hindu discipline aimed at training the consciousness for a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquillity.
n (often capital)
1. (Philosophy) (Non-Christian Religions / Hinduism) a Hindu system of philosophy aiming at the mystical union of the self with the Supreme Being in a state of complete awareness and tranquillity through certain physical and mental exercises
2. (Philosophy) any method by which such awareness and tranquillity are attained, esp a course of related exercises and postures designed to promote physical and spiritual wellbeing See Astanga yoga, hatha yoga, power yoga, raja yoga, Sivananda yoga
[from Sanskrit: a yoking, union, from yunakti he yokes]”
God though is an artificial concept injected into Yoga to placate the theists of the time in Hinduism, as Hinduism is fundamentally an Humanistic religion.
“The object of the Yoga system by inserting the conception of a personal God into the Saòkhya is merely to satisfy the theists, and to facilitate the propagation of the theory of the universe expounded in the Saòkhya. The idea of God, far from being organically interwoven in the Yoga system, is only loosely inserted. In the Yoga sutras the passages that treat of God stand disconnected, and are, indeed, in direct contradiction to the contents and aim of the system.” Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics Volume 12 pg 831
Yet even then in Hindu philosophy God is not as we define him.
In India and Eastern Beliefs, God is an impersonal whole of which everything is a part of that whole. Oddly enough it is emptiness, void, darkness. Everything is a part of God and is god. This is called Pantheism and Panentheism.
(Everything is god and god in is everything respectively.)
Hinduism which is Indian Philosophy (Yoga is 1 of 6 schools of Indian philosophy) teaches that the physical world is an illusion (maya), that the only reality is impersonal nothingness.
These six schools which accept the Vedas are grouped into 3 sets of two orthodox schools
“ I Nyaya Vaiseshika
II Sankhya Yoga
III Mimamas Vedanta
Sankhya, mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita, teaches that there is only “matter (prakrti) and souls (purusha)…two elements completely independent of each other.” Prakrti, as all material existence, is “Under the influence of purusha” where “the cosmos evolves, and the annals of the world are the history of this evolution. An important aspect of Sankhya is its theory of evolution through… three forces, known as gunas… usually translated ‘qualities’.” These three forces interact resulting in the universe pulsating called “kalpas lasting about 42,000 million years… of growth, followed by collapse.”pg 176, 178-179 The Spirit of Hinduism by David Burnett.
The Sankhya school of thought was an atheistic Hindu Philosophy and was later absorbed into the Yogic School. Thus yogic thought has to have accommodated an atheistic viewpoint into it’s thinking.
It seems to hold an amazing similarity found in the current climate in today’s church which does not hold “solely” to the Bible but to mystical spiritual experiences of “God” through practicing spiritual disciplines that elicit an experience.
This makes sense then that as we approach the time of the end that such thinking from such diverse Religions as Christianity and Hinduism should be finding common ground as a catalyst for religious unity in the future.
It also solves the dead end road of materialistic evolution and finally places man as god since God has been removed or demoted at the beginning of this process in the mid 1800’s throughout the Western Nations. An end which some have clearly understood from the outset of this, thus far, 200 year journey (and longer).
In Hinduism it is said the reason there is suffering and specifically, you have suffering, is because you think you are a personal being.
You must get rid of personality, get rid of thinking, feeling and senses in order to transcend to the state of reality which is impersonal nothingness.
Thus in India they developed techniques to achieve this state, of which one was called Yoga which was systematized in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali in around 200BC.
It was designed to break down the mind and personality and to transcend.
These were ascetic practices, thus you will find similar objectives in all asceticism. Catholic Monks practised asceticism as much as Muslim ascetic’s, or Hindu’s. It would be better classified as Mysticism, which is flooding the Church at every level and every denomination today.
The purpose of yoga is stated to be, in Sanskrit, citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ (the cessation of the transformation of awareness). The elimination of the thought processes, mind and personality for transcendence.
It is about killing the body, not physical fitness.
In general terms it is to escape the wheel of samsara, to escape the cycle of reincarnation.
Yoga is an 8 fold process 3 called Asanda Yoga which has two phases called Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga.
Dr Ron Carlson describes the 8 fold process like this
“Hatha Yoga are the first five outer stages, certain disciplines, body postures and exercises called asanas, breathing exercises called praynamas. All external
Fifth Stage Prathahari being the desensitizing of the senses and the tearing down of the personality.
Once these have been accomplished, this prepares you for Raja Yoga and the three stages. Internal stages are of focusing the mind on mantra (word or sound) or yantra (a geometric symbol).
You do this to achieve the final state of sumati kyalomocsha which is total absorption into nothingness. Aka Hindu reality. Like a drop of water falling into the ocean and merging in the One and thus you loose yourself and find peace.”
This is where we find the current trend in Politics, Religion, Finance, Law, etc running at breakneck speed to merge into One. World Government, Global Currency, Global Bank, One Religion, World Court, World Police, etc.
If you examine society over the last 150 years you will see we have all be undergoing a similar social program that parallels the 8 fold process.
This is how Hinduism and Socialism both find common ground in that the objective of both systems is the elimination of the individual and becoming One with the Collective.
It is also the lack of distinction between God and self that lends itself to a perfect adaptation with Humanism.
There are a number of different yoga’s as listed below
Yoga: Exercises (physical, mental or spiritual) based on Eastern metaphysical assumptions designed to aid in enlightenment or self-realization. Goals sometimes include altered states of consciousness or uniting the practitioner with the impersonal pantheistic God. Types of Yoga include: Karma Yoga (spiritual union through correct conduct), Bhakti Yoga (spiritual union through devotion to a Guru), Juana Yoga (spiritual union through hidden knowledge), Raja Yoga (spiritual union through mental control), Hatha Yoga (spiritual union through body control/meditation), Kundalini Yoga (spiritual union through focusing inner energy) and Tantra Yoga 4 (spiritual union through sexual practices). Yoga philosophy is based on the concept of reincarnation and is drawn from the Upanishads and other Hindu scriptures. http://www.sullivan-county.com/id3/expositer.htm#Y
Most Christians will try to argue that their yoga is just physical. Well it is clear from here and through the rest of this document, that it is Hatha Yoga Christians are generally talking about and will assist you in taking at least one step in your involvement with the occult since it is “… spiritual union through body control.” It is not about health.
That in itself should suffice but in all truth when you are deep in something it can take quite a significant amount of leverage to bring someone out of the quicksands of deception.
But let me bring this home leaving you without excuse by quoting from a well known occultist, Alice Bailey who writes concerning the 7 Rays, speaking about the 4h Ray
Birth of Horus
Intensity of Struggle
Hatha Yoga, the most dangerous method of psychic growth.
pg 86 Esoteric Psychology – A Treatise on the Seven Rays Volume 1 by Alice Bailey
This is just doing the exercises as many say thinking they have cleverly disarmed any argument. There is no argument, you do not know what you are doing.
Time to seriously consider what you are doing.
The Asanas and Sequencing
As you have probably picked up already, An Asana is the term used for the differing Yoga postures. Sequencing is also part of this in that it is the series of Asanas to be performed one after the other.
“The aspect of “sequencing”. An “Iyengar Yoga” practitioner is aware of the sequence in which different groups of asanas have to be performed.” http://www.bksiyengar.com/modules/FAQ/faq.htm
In fact many yoga practitioners know this. But why is sequencing important?
Firstly on a physical level a series of yoga asanas or positions are sequenced together on the basis of efficiency of movement, moving from one position to a logically similar but different position and so on so to create a fluid movement in the yogic routine and avoid a disjointed, stop start type of routine which would occur with diverse yoga asanas say moving from lotus, to standing on your head to cobra. That is not good sequencing.
But is it only about the physical flow of movement?
Unfortunately my explanation is merely a Western way of looking at sequencing so now let me put that in the correct light.
Let’s examine some Sequences.
Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation)
where you can blend different Asanas together like the following:
Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Salute)
Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)
Chaturanga Dandasana (Four-Limbed Staff Pose.)
Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward-Facing Dog Pose
Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downwards-facing Dog Pose)
Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)
Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Salute)
Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
The Above Sequence is the Sun Salutation of which we are informed
“The Salutation is meant to greet the sun and used as a way to worship the Hindu Sun god Surya who is the symbol of health and immortal life. The 12 distinct poses of the Sun Salutation each have their own mantra and the series is meant to celebrate the sun and the sun god.” http://www.livestrong.com/article/395082-spiritual-meanings-of-yoga-postures/
Thus the Sun Salutation would be better called Surya Salutation as that is the name of the Sun god5.
“The Sanskrit word namaskar stems from namas, which means “to bow to” or “to adore.” “ http://www.yogajournal.com/practice/928
Surya Namaskar then is Sun adoration or simply Sun Worship.
You cannot explain away your ability to bow to the sun in adoration and not find yourself in conflict with Exodus 20:3-5
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;”
It is clear that the Sun salutation sequence is a bowing down to the Sun god Surya and each Asana also has a Mantra as well.
There is no excuse for this. Do you want blessing or curse on you and your children?
That is just one Sequence.
Now I know for sure some will be saying “well I won’t perform that one”. Instead of accepting the Word of God as a sharp double edged sword of God and a quick blow to your flesh, would you would prefer the death of a thousand paper cuts then continue to read.
Below is an example of some Asanas and some Sequencing.
There are hundreds of different poses and different types of yoga, starting from types that appear harmless and merely for “physical exercise” all the way to dark and macabre yoga called Tantra which is a whole incorporation of dark Hindu arts. (In actuality Tantra is Hinduism’s “Black Magic” (left hand path) whilst the other yoga’s are “white magic”(right hand path). What’s you poison?)
I quote the following from a site following the left hand path,
“We are practising yoga and meditation from the Indian Vamachara Tantra. It belongs to the left hand path. We are practising physical yoga techniques through asanas where we in different movements and positions learn how to control latent inner forces.
Unlike ordinary yoga and meditation we are not striving to reach the illumination called Samadhi where the adept becomes “one with God” when the Kundalini melts together with the energy zone Sahasrara above the head. We are using a rare and dark system in which the kundalini reaches beyond Sahasrara. This does not lead to Samadhi but to Kaivalya where the adept becomes like a god. We are working with a number of hidden chakras besides the energy zones that are more commonly used in Yoga and meditation.” http://web.archive.org/web/20120217162758/http://www.dragonrouge.net/english/general.htm
Are your trying to become one with God (Samadhi) or become a god yourself (Kaivalya)? Answer that Christian.
I hope your answer is neither!
Interestingly it appears the Western for of Yoga is more of the left hand path leading to all becoming god’s.
This makes sense concerning the direction our society is heading.
There are numerous ways of sequencing depending on the yoga practitioner.
But as we will discover nothing is as it “appears” because in the west we are not told the whole truth about what yoga does and the stages one passes through, because they need us to participate in the wider social process of “change” (See my blog on the Generation Gap.)
It is these methods which are to bring the practitioner of yoga into a oneness unity with the Universe.
This idea is being heavily promoted now in new Bible translations, like Eugene Petersons The Message where Jesus is called “The One”.
It is a practice that comes from Hinduism as foundational and branches into other Hindu based Eastern Religions like Buddhism etc, and is specifically tailored for spiritual experience.
Regardless of what anyone tells you, the very leaders of Hinduism make it very clear what Yoga is about.
“Modern day scholars from India frequently present the attitude of “let them have yoga, [the West] … the reality is that yoga is a part of Hinduism. Allowing one part to be taken from Hinduism opens a door for the distortion of the teachings. We must remember that the roots to modern day yoga comes from Vedic Yoga. The same Vedic Yoga that is the authority of Hinduism.
Scholars at universities should take the stand that yoga is part of Hinduism, though one is required to be a Hindu to practice yoga.
One does need to be Hindu to practice yoga, but it is clear from historical evidence that Yoga comes from Hinduism.
In an article dated January/February/March, 2006 in an article titled “Yoga renamed is still Hindu” by Subhas R. Tiwari in Hinduism Today states
“The simple, immutable fact is that yoga originated from the Vedic or Hindu culture. Its techniques were not adopted by Hinduism, but originated from it.” These facts need to be unequivocally stated in light of some of the things being written to the contrary by yoga teachers. The effort to separate yoga from Hinduism must be challenged because it runs counter to the fundamental principles upon which yoga itself is premised, the yamas (restraints) and niyamas (observances). These ethical tenets and religious practices are the first two limbs of the eight-limbed ashtanga yoga system which also includes asana (postures), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sense withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (contemplation/Self Realization). Efforts to separate yoga from its spiritual centre reveal ignorance of the goal of yoga.”
Above: Explaining the 8 Limbs of Yoga . Picture from: http://www.yogaholistic.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/patanjali.jpg
Subhas R Tiwari is a professor at the Hindu University of America. He is a graduate of the Bihar Yoga Bharati University with a master’s degree in yoga philosophy.
He goes on saying
“This 5,000-year-old system is perhaps the best known, most accessible and cost effective health and beauty program around. Yoga is also much more, as it was intended by the Vedic seers as an instrument which can lead one to apprehend the Absolute, Ultimate Reality, called the Brahman Reality, or God.” http://web.archive.org/web/20090109020103/http://www.hinduismtoday.com/archives/2006/1-3/09_opinion.shtml
Maria Montenegro, a teacher of Yoga for 8 years says regarding the asanas (positions)
“The positions honour various Hindu deities” “You hold positions for spiritual purposes.”11’00” Interview of Maria Montenegro by Fran Sankey – Should Christians do yoga
I quote from her website
“Hatha yoga uses various postures called asanas. Many asanas are based on postures that honour Hindu deities who manifest themselves in forms such as the sun, the tiger, the tree, the snake, etc.” http://www.christiananswersforthenewage.org/Articles_Yoga.html
Remembering how we heard that “Hatha Yoga [was] (spiritual union through body control)”, this is reinforced by J Gordon Melton
“Hatha yoga can be thought of as the means of attaining union through developing control of the physical body.” J. Gordon Melton, New Age Encyclopedia, p. 207.
So why do they say this?
Well Hatha is made up of two words “ha” meaning moon and “tha” meaning sun. So we are dealing with Sun and Moon worship.
Hatha Yoga means more than mere physical exercise or postures.
“In Sanskrit, the moon is known as “Ha” and the sun is “Tha” – thus Hatha. Hatha Yoga refers to the practice of bringing harmony to the two main energies in the human body – the energy of the moon and the energy of the sun. The third main energy channel is called “shushumna” – which relates to the central nervous system. Our consciousness continuously flows through this central spinal channel.” The meaning of Hatha Yoga by Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda (Swamiji). http://www.yogaindailylife.org/knowledge/yoga-philosophy/the-meaning-of-hatha-yoga
This concept is practiced in rapid breathing exercises by blocking the left nostril breathing in through the right nostril and then blocking the right nostril and breathing out as it is surmised the energy of the sun runs through the energy lines of the body to the right nostril and the energy of the moon runs through alternate lines of energy to the left nostril.
It is a shame that those who suffer allergies are restricted in their spiritual development.
Richard Hittleman author of “Yoga: The 8 steps to Health and Peace” and early pioneer on Hatha Yoga writes about taking his program to
“… prepare the physical and subtle bodies for the esoteric objectives of Hatha Yoga.” pg 110
His “program” is for the unfit, non dextrous Westerner who has gown up sitting on chairs, been transported everywhere and not conditioned to perform most of the asanas unlike those who have been conditioned to sitting on the ground, legs crossed etc even as adults.
When he says “esoteric objectives” he is talking about the inner or spiritual aspects of the practise for the practitioner. Thus by performing his “prepatory” exercises, you have been readied for receiving the spiritual aspects of the exercise.
This is called conditioning.
The claim is that Hatha Yoga is just physical exercise is delusional.
Maria Montenegro on her website also quotes Richard Hittleman who again put the mantra “it’s just physical exercise” of Hatha Yoga to bed yet again as Yoga Journal informs us,
“Richard Hittleman, who had a television show on yoga, stated that as yoga students practiced the physical positions, they would eventually be ready to investigate the spiritual component which is “the entire essence of the subject” (Yoga Journal, May/June 1993, p. 68).” http://www.christiananswersforthenewage.org/Articles_Yoga.html
Yoga is not a technique for relaxation or fitness. It is an ancient religious technique designed for spiritual reasons. Spiritual reasons that have serious consequences.
You may obtain relaxation and fitness as a secondary by product but it is not the primary objective. We just mentioned the primary objective as religious and spiritual. And any benefit you obtain will certainly be offset by the spiritual component as you will shortly see.
Let me conclude this section on the following note as it leads into the next section very well.
The current climate which is all about relaxation, stress reduction supported by educational institutions for kids and adults. Workplaces “caring” for their staff are all promoting a concept to help transition the west into synthesis with the east.
Consider the following from well published and followed, witch, Starhawk, who states
“to open up the starlight consciousness . . . to make contact with the Divine within. The beginner must develop four basic abilities: relaxation, concentration, visualization, and projection. Relaxation is important because any form of tension blocks energy.” pg 62 The spiral dance by Starhawk
Why do you think everything is about “relaxation”, “health”, “fitness”, “food”. Just consider the TV shows over the last 5 years and see how they push this agenda. (See my blog on The Color RunTM
Our society has been sped up to generate stress, our food, water and air have been polluted on purpose to change human beings.
Consider the words of Jesuit Teilhard de Chardin (one of those involved in the Piltdown Man hoax)
“In 1946, Teilhard de Chardin foresaw the technology of the 21st Century, including genetic engineering and nanotechnology. He said that “the release of nuclear energy, overwhelmingly and intoxicating though it was,” was “simply the first act, even a mere prelude” in “a series of fantastic events” which would lead us to such feats as ‘…vitalisation of matter by the creation of super-molecules. The re-modelling of the human organism by means of hormones. Control of heredity and sex by the manipulation of genes and chromosomes… The arousing and harnessing of the unfathomable intellectual and effective powers still latent in the human mass… Is not every kind of effect produced by a suitable arrangement of matter? And have we not reason to hope in the end we shall be able to arrange every kind of matter, following the results we have obtained in the nuclear field?'” Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, “Some reflections on the Spiritual Repercussions of the Atom Bomb,” in the Future of Man pg 144 excepted from False Dawn by Lee Penn pg 349.
This sentence I emboldened because it is something we know for sure that is in our foods today and is changing boys into girls, visa versa, and maturing girls at younger ages.
Create the need to de-stress by offering relaxation the occult way and you open up to contact the “Divine within”. But promote it as a healthy lifestyle.
The purpose of Yoga is, through physical and mental exercises, to encourage and promote spiritual energy to move you through different stages of growth, physically (disabling or tuning out the 5 senses) psychologically (in changing your mind) and spiritually (unity with the ALL) whilst also being a matter of something not just theoretical or physical benefit but also something you experience spiritually.
This energy goes by various terms but one is Kundalini, which can be awakened by various asanas. For example:
“Kundalini uses headstand poses to awake and uncoil the serpent energy in the base of the spine, bringing it to the crown of the head.”
Kundalini, we are told by occult authority, Hans-Ulrich Rieker, is
“… the mainstay of ALL yoga practices.” pg 101 The Yoga of Light: Hatha Yoga Pradipika
Notice that. He was unreserved about this. All yoga practices including Hatha Yoga.
This energy is worth considering in the light of
“I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.”
2 Corinthians 11:14-15
“14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”
Notice Light and Lightning are both forms of energy.
This process by which this occurs I will explain.
This Kundalini Force rises up through what are called Chakras which are spiritual energy centres which number 7 all the way to the top of the head. The term Chakra means wheel.
Quoting a good explanation from a website that promotes yoga,
“The Kundalini, which is to nourish the tree of life within us, is coiled up like a serpent and therefore it has been called, ‘The Serpent Power’. It has been described in great detail in the Upanishads. Kundalini Yoga is supposed to be supreme in all the Yogas. Guru Vashistha asserted that Kundalini is the seat of absolute knowledge. The awareness of the presence of this primordial energy Kundalini within the human body was considered by the sages and saints to be the highest knowledge. The Kundalini and Chakras have been vividly described in Vedic and Tantric texts.” http://www.sol.com.au/kor/14_02.htm
The Upanishads, Vedas and Tantric texts are some of a number of different Hindu holy scriptures.
Another website with a positive attitude about yoga says
“Eliade talks about Tapas (heat or ardor) through which the acetic becomes clairvoyant and even incarnates the Gods; for when the small self is transcended we see with the Eye of the Universe. Eliade tells us that Kundalini moves in the central channel of the spine (susumna) by the force aroused by the mind, the prana is drawn upward through the susumna as a needle draws a thread. Kundalini is awakened by yoga positions and breath withholding until the prana becomes absorbed in the Void (Sunya); that is in mahasukha, the Great Bliss which destroys all sins.” http://biologyofkundalini.com/article.php?story=Prana
This “Great Bliss” contradicts John the Baptist speaking of Jesus in John 1:29
“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
Note that 1 John 2:22 states
” Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.”
To deny is the Greek word avrne, omai (arneomai) meaning “contradict”.
Does Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God take away sin or does being absorbed in the void, the Great Bliss destroy all sins?
Someone is lying. Guess who?
All cultures world wide worship the serpent. There is only one text that warns us about the serpent the Word of God, the Bible.
Let’s first understand some basic things the Bible has to say about this before we go further.
Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
So it was the Serpent who deceived Eve.
Kundalini is described in the Yoga Kundalini Upanishad 1:82 as a coiled snake.
“Certain postures, such as the lotus position, are taken to activate the psychic energy centres. And specific breathing exercises are practiced to infuse the soul with cosmic energy floating in the air.” Concise Dictionary of the Occult and New Age by Debra Lardie pg 289
Now this Kundalini is fanned into flame by something called Prana which is also called Life Force or Breath (which is in all things aka Star Wars for example. The conditioning of the people has been on going for many decades.).
This then is akin to fire and oxygen, thus generating heat where you are the fuel.
As you may have noticed in the first posting https://theunfathomablemindofgod.wordpress.com/2013/10/ I mentioned this heat as subject to the laws of entropy and thermodynamics and is not the way to eternal life. It is a false fire and not of the Holy Spirit as He is depicted in Acts 2:3 also as fire.
The best lie always parallels the truth.
So Kundalini can also be depicted as a flame not just as serpent.
It is also called :
Chi – China
Qi – Korea
Ki – Japan
Mana – Polynesia
(This is why role playing games and in some computer games, magic characters have to rebuild their Mana to fire again or to cast another spell. This has mentally prepared the masses of young people back in the 1980’s and 1990’s. It’s called conditioning. Understand Mana has no relation to the Mana the Israelites ate for 40 years in the wilderness after leaving Egypt.)
Understand many of these game makers are fully aware of what they are promoting whilst saying at the same time (it’s just a game). For example examine Steve Jackson’s Game “Illuminati” and the uncanny prediction to the last “coincidental” 20 years of “terrorist attacks” and Government activity.
Thus the phrase “may the force be with you” from Star Wars is used in witchcraft.
We probably shouldn’t be using it. Even in jest. Things are far more serious than we would like to admit.
The Bible says in Daniel 11:35-38
35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. 36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. 37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. 38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
There is debate over what this refers. Some consider it fulfilled in Antiochus Epiphanies.
Others think this is speaking of a coming future event.
Yet that all aside, the question is, is God a force like electricity or is He a person?
This is an important issue.
Jehovah’s Witnesses consider the Holy Spirit a force too.
If he is not a person then He is impersonal and does not care for you, but since God is a person He cares for us and died for us.
In Genesis, Man was created in “the image of God”. Are we a force or do we have personality / soul?
Let’s examine Daniel 8:23-27 on this matter where we are told of one who shall understand dark sentences and make craft to prosper.
“23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. 24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. 25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand. 26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days. 27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.”
What sort of dark sentences? Perl then cast off?
What sort of crafts? Sewing and knitting?
The answer to that is clearly incantations, spells and mantras. Which is the dark sentences of witchcraft.
Kundalini is also viewed in some circles as a dragon.
“The Red Dragon is a mythological entity which exists in all times and cultures. The Dragon can be viewed as a winged serpent. From the perspective of the history of religions the serpent is a symbol of the earth and the underworld. The eagle (and birds in general) are symbols of the heavens. The dragon is a unity of these two fundamental principles. The Dragon is a picture of the Hermetic principle “That which is below is like that which is above and that which is above is like that which is below”. In China the dragon is a symbol of Tao, that which is beyond all terms and all polarities (Yin and Yang) but also is the force behind all. The Dragon represents the unknown and the hidden energy in man and in nature. The word dragon comes from the Greek verb derkein which means “to see”. The Dragon is the principle of clear seeing: the ability to see things in a new light as they really are, beyond all illusions. For this reason the dragon has great wisdom and power in the myths. The wisdom of the dragon is symbolized by the treasure it guards or the pearl that the dragon carries in his mouth. To find this wisdom and knowledge man must search in his/her inner aspects and in the unknown. In Yoga the dragon is called the Kundalini, the force that is hidden inside man. The Draconian path strives to make this unconscious force and knowledge conscious. “A picture says more than a thousand words” and the symbol of the dragon and the myths about it carries information about how the unconscious can become conscious and how man can evolve http://web.archive.org/web/20120217162758/http://www.dragonrouge.net/english/general.htm
The Red Dragon is also spoken about in the scriptures in Revelation 12:3
“And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.”
This is not the only reference to the Dragon, and it specifically comes up repeatedly in The Book of Revelation as an enemy of Gods people.
“And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.”
A nice contrast at the end of vs 9 “If any man have an ear, let him hear” whilst dragon means “to see”. We find currently the philosophy of Socrates and Karl Marx “if you don’t see it it does not exist” dominating our world, but it is interesting that in Romans 10:17 we read
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
It brings more relevance to the Apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 5:6-8
“Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight🙂 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”
It then shows clearly who are Christ’s and who are not for those who live by sight and followers of the Dragon but in John 10:27 Jesus tells us
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me”
This same site discussing the Red Dragon goes on to explain on which path they travel with their yoga stating
“We are practising yoga and meditation from the Indian Vamachara Tantra. It belongs to the left hand path. We are practising physical yoga techniques through asanas where we in different movements and positions learn how to control latent inner forces. We are also using a certain form of Rune yoga where the forces of the runes are used.
The goal with our yoga and meditation is to awake the latent inner force that is called Kundalini in the Tantra.
Understand that they are comparing the yoga path they are on with the “usual” right hand path” or white witchcraft or the “good” way, which is the path promoted in the west.
Within the occult there are only 3 ways, the right hand path, the left hand path or the middle way. Which ever “way” you take it is opposed to the way of Jesus Christ.
2 Kings 22:2 states
“And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.”
Whilst Matthew 7:13-14 states
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
The broad way is the middle way, a way that can incorporate many ways, it is inclusive.
The way of Jesus Christ is the Narrow Way. It is exclusive and is the little considered one way, a way that many try to claim is the middle way. Be not deceived, it most certainly is not.
The Hindu Legend of Patanjali and the Biblical Lucifer / Tyrus
As Previously mentioned Patanjali systematized the Yoga Sutras in around 200BC.
I wish to examine the legends behind this individual which is veiled in mystery.
There are claims of their being even 3 Patanjali’s in History and that the systematising of the Yoga Sutras have been a collaboration of different men who have placed these under the auspices of the original Patanjali. Not an uncommon practise in the past. Yet there seems to be considerable evidence that there was a primary Patanjali who at least commenced the process of systematisation.
None the less, the details of the history are quite irrelevant as they only deal with speculation and conjecture. The issue here is what the story’s tell us about Patanjali as they present themselves as very curious indeed.
Let’s look at (Guruji’s) Iyengar’s Invocation to Patanjali
“Let us bow before the noblest of sages Patanjali, who gave yoga for serenity and sanctity of mind, grammar for clarity and purity of speech and medicine for perfection of health. Let us prostrate before Patanjali, an incarnation of Adisesa, whose upper body has a human form, whose arms hold a conch and a disc, and who is crowned by a thousand-headed cobra.” http://www.bksiyengar.com/modules/IYoga/sage.htm
Adisesa is called “Lord of Serpents” explained by Sri Sri
“Vishnu was lying on the bed of snakes — the serpent Adishésha with a 1,000 heads. When the Rishis approached Him, He gave them Adishésha (the symbol of awareness), who took birth in the world as Maharishi Patanjali.” http://www.artofliving.org/in-en/patanjali-yogasutra
Hence Patanjali came to this earth to give this knowledge of yoga which came to be known as the Yoga Sutras.
More of the story speaks of Gonika, who thinks her earthly life was at its end, had searched for a worthy son to whom she could transmit her knowledge. But she had found no one. When her penance (tapas) come to an end, she looked to the Sun God and prayed to Him to fulfil her desire. She took a handful of water, as a final oblation to Him, closed her eyes and meditated on the Sun. She opened her eyes and looked at her palms as she was about to offer the water. There she saw a tiny snake moving in her palms who took on human form. This tiny human male prostrated to yogini Gonika and asked her to accept him as her son. Thus, she named him Patanjali. ( Pata means fallen or falling and Anjali means palms folded in prayer).
This idea of the snake is most interesting for in Indian Culture and Hinduism the snakes are called Nagas. Their association with darkness is very appropriate whilst they also possessed “treasure” and were the keeper of the books of mystic knowledge.
“The snakes are the sons of Kadru, or of Surasa, one of the divine mothers. It has been related above (under ‘sungod’) that Garuda is their enemy and devours them, whence it has been concluded that the Nagas represent darkness which is dispelled by the sun. But there is another aspect of the Nagas which was more important for the imagination
of the people; they were probably regarded as guarding or possessing treasures, and assuming the shape of snakes.” Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics Volume 2 pg 809.
Thus Gonika’s hands were in a prayerful gesture (anjali) and he had fallen (pat) from heaven. http://www.iyengaryoga.in/life_patanjali.htm
This is how Sage Patanjali is said to have come into this mortal world. http://www.bksiyengar.com/modules/IYoga/legend.htm
It is quite apt that what appeared was a “tiny snake” which became human in form offered mankind wisdom and knowledge by enticing them to eat of the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil” Genesis 3 and in Revelation 12:7-9 we see him cast out of heaven
“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
We are also warned Satan can transform himself into an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14.
Equally the story displays elements parallel to the Christian Scriptures in that this Patanjali fell (pat) from heaven.
A serpent that fell from heaven sounds like Lucifer who fell from heaven.
In another legend
“… he was the son of Angiras, one of the ten sons of Brahma, the Creator; and of Sati, the consort of Siva. If so, this would make him not only the grandson of the Creator of the universe, but also the brother of Brhaspati, god of wisdom and eloquence and chief offerer of sacrifices.” http://www.kofibusia.com/patanjali/patanjali.php A biography of Śri Patañjali by Kofi Busia
“Brhaspati was seen as the personification of the planet Jupiter and thus as one of ten sons equates with the ancient pagan idea of there being ten planets. This also works into Greek Mythology with Zeus who holds the lightening bolt or also see in Norse Mythology as Thors Hammer. The naming of the seven days of the week also attests to an unexpected consistency in that our Thursday derived from the Scandinavian Thor’s Day is called in Sanskrit Brhaspati.” Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics Volume 3 pg 111.
The image of lightening in Zeus’s hand is quite apt when considered with the description of Satan “falling as lightening” Luke 10:18.
Again we see some similar characteristics with Lucifer / Satan who is said to have been the chief offerer of the sacrifice of praise (Jeremiah 33:11, Hosea 14:2, Hebrews 13:15) in heaven prior to be falling from heaven.
It is stated in Isaiah 14:11-12
“Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!”
Notice that Lucifer had “viols” instruments, similar to Patanjali with the conch, as explained further
“One of the uplifted hands holds sankha, the conch that embodies the energy of sound. It both calls students to practice and announces the imminent ending of the world as they have so far known it.4” A biography of Śri Patañjali by Kofi Busiahttp://www.kofibusia.com/patanjali/patanjali.php
Uplifted hands is a symbol of praise and the conch embodies “the energy of sound”.
Such sound as a precursor to the end of the world as one famous occultist writes
“Great Forces are awaiting the hour when They can function as the Liberators and the Deliverers of mankind. But the door to Their entrance must be opened by humanity itself and it will be opened by a united act of the will, expressed through some formula of words and expressed in sound.” The Externalisation of the Hierarchy by Alice Bailey pg 173
Again quoting scripture this time from Ezekiel 28:12-16 again examine the symmetry
“Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. 16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.”
Here we have Tyrus used as another name for Lucifer. If you look at the meaning of the Hebrew behind this it is found there are two key aspects that stand out being “adversary” and “bringing in besides or in addition to what is or has been brought in.” So Tyrus / Lucifer was bringing in something foreign and polluting the worship it appears. Namely Iniquity was found in him that is uniquely within compared to without.
Just as in one of the legends Patanjali was “brother of Brhaspati, god of wisdom” so to Tyrus is “full of wisdom” it also states a few verses later in Ezekiel 28:17
“Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.”
Patanjali and Lucifer / Tyrus / Satan / are both depicted with ability for sound, fell from heaven, and represented as a serpent, and transform into another appearance.
I do not wish to go further into this as this suffices. It is equally difficult to establish further connections without wading too deep into Hindu mythology but what I have presented here I hope establishes a clear division from the teaching in Hinduism and Christianity. one venerates the serpent (nagas), the other loathes the serpent.
Consider Amos 3:3
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”

3. Buddha teaches an 8 fold path, and Buddhism derived from Hinduism but does not take the Vedas as authority.
4. As practised by the pop star Sting and his Wife.
5. It is most likely the 12 poses reference the months of the year or the zodiac, though in Eastern traditions the Zodiac can be 13. Though that is much of a muchness since traditionally 13 is considered as 12 in many cultures, for example, Israel had 13 tribes called the 12 tribes, in English culture we have the bakers dozen.
